The Work Nobody Sees: Why Your Next Season Starts Now
As race season winds down, it's tempting to immediately shift our attention to what's next. New races, bigger goals, faster times, longer distances... and maybe signing up for a bajillion races all at once because you're riding that post-race high!
On the flip side, some athletes view the off-season as an opportunity to step away from training entirely until it's time to start preparing for their next big race.
But here's the thing: The off-season isn't just time OFF. It's an opportunity to get better!
Yes, recovery and taking a mental break from the demands of race-specific training are important. But once you've had that opportunity to recharge, the off-season is an incredibly valuable time to work on the things that might be holding you back.
Maybe that means building strength, improving swim technique, developing better bike-handling skills, or establishing more consistency in your training routine.
Rather than waiting until your next race build to address those limiters (and hoping they'll somehow improve on their own!), use this time to be intentional about your development.
My advice? Identify one or two areas that could make the biggest difference in your performance next season and start putting in the work now.
Not every workout needs to be epic, and not every training session needs to leave you exhausted. But the small, consistent investments you make now can pay some pretty big dividends when you toe the line in 2027! |
